The City of Toronto and the TTC are looking for feedback on their proposal called RAPIDTO: BATHURST STREET to reduce traffic lanes to one lane northbound and one lane southbound on Bathurst St. between Eglinton Ave and Lakeshore Blvd. in order to create dedicated bus lanes (north of Bloor) and streetcar right-of-way (south of Bloor) on this 7.5 km stretch of Bathurst. These lanes will be in effect 24/7.

The Proposal will go to City Hall on May 26th for approval.

Proposed Priority Bus Lanes: Eglinton Avenue West to Bloor Street West

Proposed Priority Streetcar Lanes: Bloor Street West to Lake Shore Boulevard West

  • Parking along the whole stretch, including the popular retail stretch south of Dupont will be prohibited 24/7.
  • Because there will be only one lane in each direction, left turns will be prohibited or more severely restricted at most times. (One car trying to make a left turn from a single lane will block traffic for blocks; witness how traffic is now snarled on Davenport westbound at Bathurst because of cars waiting to make left turns from the single through lane).
  • There will also be prohibitions on right turn lanes as traffic waiting to give the right of way to pedestrians, bikes and buses will block the bus lane or the only through lane.

These changes will SERIOUSLY AFFECT our ability to navigate through what are already very congested city streets and will filter traffic into surrounding neighbourhoods.

This major change is also being proposed before the establishment of the new TRAFFIC CZAR as approved by Council last month.
